Manage asset tags
The Manage Tags tab displays a table of all asset tags created in your organization. By default, the table shows 10 tags per page and is sorted by the number of assets assigned to each tag (highest first). You can paginate through all tags using the navigation controls at the bottom of the table.
Accessing Manage Tags
1 – Navigate to Assets in the left sidebar.
2 – On the Assets page, click the Manage Tags tab (next to “Asset Inventory”) at the top of the content area. The Manage Tags view will load, displaying the full list of asset tags.
The table contains two columns:
Asset Tag — the name of the tag. You can click the sort icon on this column header to sort tags alphabetically.
Count — The number of assets currently assigned to each tag. For example, “asklepios” has 338 assets, “UNKNOWN” has 152, etc. This column is useful for quickly understanding which tags are most heavily used.
Action — two icon buttons per row: a pencil (Edit) icon to rename the tag, and a trash (Delete) icon to remove it.
The total number of tags in your organization is displayed above the table (e.g., “27 total Asset tags”).
1. Add a new tag
Use the Add tag button to create a new custom tag that can be assigned to assets.
1 – On the Manage Tags tab, click the + Add tag button in the top-right corner of the page. The “Add a new asset tag” panel will slide in from the right.
2 – Enter a name in the Tag name field. Tag names should be descriptive and consistent with your organization’s naming conventions (e.g., Discover, Internet, cloud, EMEA, production). The field is required and cannot be left empty.
3 – Click Save to create the tag. The panel will close and the new tag will appear in the Manage Tags table. Click Cancel to discard the action without saving.
Tip: Plan your tag naming convention before creating tags. Consistent, clear names make it easier for your team to apply and filter tags across large asset inventories.
2. Edit (rename) a tag
If a tag name needs to be updated, you can rename it at any time. Renaming a tag automatically updates it across all assets it is currently assigned to — no manual reassignment is needed.
1 – In the Manage Tags table, locate the tag you want to rename and click the pencil (Edit) icon in its Action column. The “Edit asset tag” panel will slide in from the right, pre-filled with the current tag name.
2 – Update the Tag name field with the new name.
3 – Click Save to apply the change. The panel will close and the updated name will be reflected in the table immediately. Click Cancel to discard without saving.
3. Delete a tag
Deleting a tag permanently removes it from your organization’s tag library and unassigns it from all assets it was applied to. This action cannot be undone.
1 – In the Manage Tags table, locate the tag you want to delete and click the trash (Delete) icon in its Action column. A confirmation dialog will appear.
2 – Review the confirmation message. It will display: “This will unassign the tag from [X] assets. This action cannot be undone.” — where [X] is the number of assets currently using that tag.
3 – Click Remove tag to permanently delete the tag, or Cancel to go back without making changes.
Important: Deleting a tag with a high asset count (e.g., hundreds of assets) will remove that label from all those assets at once. Make sure you no longer need the tag before confirming deletion.
4. Bulk tags selection
The table includes checkboxes for multi-selection:
- Click the checkbox in the header row to select all 10 tags on the current page. A bar appears below the total count showing: “10 selected. Select all 27 asset tags” and a Delete button.
- Select all tags: Click the “Select all 27 asset tags” link to extend the selection across all pages. The bar updates to: “All asset tags are selected. Clear selection”.
- Individual selection: Click any row checkbox to select or deselect a specific tag.
- Clear selection: Click Clear selection to deselect everything.
4.1 Bulk Deleting Tags
After selecting multiple (or all) tags:
1 – Click the Delete button that appears in the selection bar. A confirmation dialog will show.
2 – Click the Cancel button to cancel the action, or
3 – Click the Remove tags button to delete the tag.
⚠️ Important: Bulk deletion permanently removes all selected tags and unassigns them from every associated asset.
5. Assign tags to asset
To learn how to assign Tags to assets check the Manage Assets in Autobahn guide.
Key Notes and Best Practices
- Tags are organization-wide labels. Once a tag is created, it can be assigned to any asset in the Asset Inventory.
- Deletion is permanent and cascading. When a tag is deleted, it is immediately unassigned from every asset that carried it, with no undo option.
- The “None” tag represents assets with no tag assigned and appears as a special italic entry in the list.
- Tag names are free-form text. Examples in the system show names can be client names, geographic regions, or internal identifiers.
- Use the Count column to identify high-impact tags before renaming or deleting — a tag with a high asset count will affect many assets if changed.
